What is the number one question women ask before a family photo session? “What do I wear?” Let’s face it, this isn’t an easy decision. Instead of choosing a color scheme for your family photos, today we’ll focus on one often overlooked aspect that can really make you look great in photos.
Fundamental, yet often overlooked, layering your attire works magic to make your family’s photos go from “like” to “LOVE!”
What is layering?
Easy! Layering is simply an outfit made up of multiple- you got it, layers!
Layering for Women
While a fitted and flowy long dress will flatter your figure in photos, layering on a ruffled cardigan, a braided belt, and even 2 or 3 necklaces adds dimension and visual interest to complete the outfit.
Layering your outfit draws more attention to you- your radiant smile as you chase your mischievous toddler across the field during a lifestyle photo session, the halo of light on your hair as the sun fades away, the authentic laughter from a family tickle war. If you need inspiration, Casey Wiegand is a layering genius!
Same goes for dads and children. I always recommend dressing up a little for your photo session.
Layering for Men
Layers on men look phenomenal on camera. Have you ever noticed the mannequins in a store like Zara Men or J. Crew? They’re usually wearing several layers at once.
Encourage your husband to layer on a blazer, vest, or sport coat and a pocket square. If it’s a hot day, we’ll only ask him to pop it on during photos. Trust me, it’s worth an hour of discomfort for photos that will last you both a lifetime.
Layering for Children
Add a pretty ribbon and boho boots to your daughter’s gingham dress for visual flair.

Coordinating hair accessories, belts, vests, cardigans- the little things can make the biggest difference. Have you ever considered adding sunglasses or a romantic floral crown to her look? Let’s make it even easier. Adding in lace wherever you can is a no-fail layering win every time!
The best part about layering your little girl’s look is that you probably have accessories already on hand, no shopping required!
Wrangle your toddler son long enough to slip a vest over his button-down (and if you’ve got mad skillz, wipe the dirt off his forehead too.) Add suspenders, a bow tie, or a whimsical fedora to capture his personality and charm. Love this perfect example of layering a little boy’s loo. Oh, and these hipster outfit ideas too.

Try it! Trust me, you won’t regret it.
