What is birth photography and why would you want a photographer to document your child’s birth? This is a question I get asked a lot, and I’m more than happy to tell you all about home birth photography here in San José, Costa Rica.
First of all, let’s talk about what many parents are concerned about: privacy. During your pre-consulation, you and I will chat over over decaf about what expectations you have for your home birth photography session. You’ll share about what kind of photos you’re most looking forward to, how you envision your ideal birth experience, what types of photos you daydream about, and address your privacy concerns.
Now that we’ve got that all cleared up, what is homebirth photography all about?
Birth photography captures intense emotion and events you’ll probably never remember if you hadn’t captured them on film. As seasoned mothers know, there comes a time during childbirth and labor that you’re “in the zone” focused on the work your body is doing to carefully ease out baby and completely oblivious of the details.
Believe it or not, most mothers will tell you that they weren’t even aware that photos were taken during their baby’s birth. These are the moments you’ll treasure: the optimistic encouragement of your birthing partners, dad’s cool washcloth sweeping across your forehead, clenching your midwives hands of experience and feeling strong waves of contractions from head to toe, blissful tears streaming down your husband’s unshaven face as he reaches out to your child, his child, for the first time.
Every birth experience is unique. Every baby’s welcome into the world is truly a miracle, the first chapter of your new family waiting to be told. Your birth story, including the overwhelming anticipation and victorious arrival comes to life time and time again when you book a birth photography session. Thumbing through the pages of baby’s birth album alongside your growing toddler, gazing at the mounted wall prints displayed above her crib, you’ll remember this chapter of life, breathe it in, and enjoy it for a few more minutes.
Your baby’s birth album, chockful of the tiniest details- what mom was wearing, the lush, soft bedding tucked carefully into the crib, anticipating baby’s arrival, the clock’s hands- magically frozen at the exact moment baby is born, and baby’s freshly opened eyes, taking in his awestruck mother for the first time. This baby album is valuable today. And its value only increases as your child grows.
